WhatsApp is developing a new ‘search’ feature for an upcoming update.

WhatsApp is developing a feature aimed at protecting users from deceptive or altered images that may be shared with them.

This new functionality allows users to search for shared images on the web, helping them identify potentially misleading or fake visuals, according to WABetaInfo.

For example, if a user receives an image that appears to be altered or taken out of context, this feature will enable them to search for similar images or the original version online to verify its authenticity.

Currently in development, this search feature will be included in a future update of Meta’s instant messaging app. However, a beta version is already available for users with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.21.31 update, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

As reported by WABetaInfo, when users initiate an image search, the image will be uploaded to Google for searching without being shared with WhatsApp. This ensures that the messaging app does not store or process the image or its caption.

Users can also utilize this feature to verify the authenticity of images shared in their conversations, whether from news articles, social media, or memes that might be manipulated to spread misinformation.

It’s worth noting that the image search feature will be applicable to all images, regardless of how they were shared or frequently forwarded. This means users can seek more information about any image they receive, whether from a close contact or through a forwarded message.

However, the option to search for ‘links’ on the web will only be available for frequently forwarded messages. Users will maintain full control over initiating a search, ensuring that no data is shared without their explicit consent.
