‘Outside’ director Carlo Ledesma describes Netflix’s zombie film as ‘deeply and authentically Filipino’

During a dialogue following the advanced screening of the film at the Grand Hyatt Manila on Wednesday, director Carlo Ledesma stated, “Ultimately, it’s truly a Filipino film,” emphasizing several key aspects.

Firstly, the film was shot in Ledesma’s home province of Negros Occidental, featuring scenes in a traditional Filipino mansion and sugarcane fields on a local farm. “You can’t shoot that anywhere else in the world,” Ledesma noted.

Secondly, Ledesma aimed to depict the Filipino family, not in an idealized manner as often seen in media portrayals.

“I believe that the backstory of [Sid Lucero’s] character reflects experiences that many Filipinos go through,” Ledesma added.
