The 2022 release of The Legend of Maula Jatt in Pakistan became a major success, marking a remake of the 1979 cult classic Maula Jatt. Directed by Bilal Lashari, the film stars Fawad Khan as the legendary Maula Jatt, with Mahira Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi in key roles.
Praised for its high production values and captivating storyline, the film has generated excitement among Indian fans, as its producers announced plans to soon reveal the list of cinemas where it will be screened.
The Legend of Maula Jatt was both a critical and commercial hit in Pakistan, reigniting the iconic rivalry between Maula Jatt and Noori Nath, characters originally portrayed by Sultan Rahi and Mustafa Qureshi in the original film.
The film, which faced a nearly two-year delay due to legal issues, was cleared for release last year when Sarwer Bhatti, producer of the original film, withdrew all legal cases. Bhatti dismissed rumors of a financial settlement and stated that his decision was motivated by his commitment to supporting the local film industry.
In a statement, Bhatti explained, “Throughout my career, I’ve worked hard for the welfare of local cinema. If withdrawing the case helps strengthen the industry, then I’ll do so. More local releases across the country will benefit the industry.”
Speaking with The Express Tribune, director Bilal Lashari emphasized that unlike the original, which primarily appealed to rural audiences in Punjab, the remake is designed for a broader audience. “The film transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries. A Sindhi will enjoy it just as much as a Punjabi. The content will resonate with the new generation, ensuring the legacy of Maula and Noori endures,” Lashari said.
