James Franco Opens Up About the Pain of Being Labeled ‘Bad’ Following 2021 Allegations

James Franco opened up about how a 2021 lawsuit significantly impacted both his personal and professional life.

In an interview with Variety, published on October 25 ahead of the Rome Film Festival premiere of his film Hey Joe, the 46-year-old actor discussed the lawsuit he settled in 2021, which was based on allegations of sexual misconduct made by five women, including four of his former acting students.

“Being told you’re bad is painful,” Franco admitted, expressing a sense of relief at having his perspective shifted. “But ultimately, that’s kind of what I needed to stop going down the path I was on.”

He reflected on how the experience prompted him to reevaluate his priorities: “After taking a pause and making some changes, what I seek to fulfill me in life is different now.”

Franco made his film comeback this year with the release of the French thriller The Price of Money: A Largo Winch Adventure, marking his first film since 2019. Although the movie premiered in France in July, there are currently no plans for an American release.

“Ultimately, I’m kind of grateful because it gave me the opportunity to focus on my private work and really make the changes I needed,” he explained. “Now that I’m working again, I’m able to dedicate myself to the project without trying to fill some void through work. It’s about appreciating my life and aiming to contribute positively to any project I undertake.”

The Spider-Man star also shared his thoughts on becoming somewhat of a “ghost” in Hollywood after experiencing immense fame. “It is what it is. Honestly, I’ve moved past it. It was addressed, and I was able to change, so that’s it—it’s over. I’ve also worked in the U.S., so I’m just focusing on moving forward,” Franco stated.
