Azam Swati re-arrested shortly after his release from prison.

ATTOCK: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Azam Swati was re-arrested by police on Tuesday, just after being released from Attock jail.

This morning, Swati was taken into custody by Taxila police as he exited the jail premises. Sources indicate that he was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court the day prior in connection with several cases stemming from his party’s demonstration on October 4.

According to police, he was arrested under the Terrorism Act, facing 22 serious charges filed at the Taxila police station and Saddar Hasan Abdal police station.

On October 8, Swati, along with PTI founder Imran Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, was implicated in various cases, including one related to the death of an Islamabad policeman during the party’s protest in the capital.

The PTI leaders face charges under 12 sections, including attempted murder, arson, attacks on the state, and violence against police officers.

Other party members named in the cases include Omar Ayub, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, PTI Islamabad President Aamir Mughal, Malik Hafeez Ur Rehman Tipu, and around 400 unidentified individuals.

The case concerning the policeman’s death was filed on the state’s behalf at the Noon Police Station in Islamabad after Constable Abdul Hameed died on Sunday. He was reportedly attacked by rioters during PTI’s protest at D Chowk while on duty at Chungi Number 26 on GT Road on October 4.

The constable was allegedly “kidnapped” and later died from his injuries, with the case suggesting that he was tortured by protestors at the instigation of PTI leaders, including Khan and Gandapur.

“The protesters assaulted the policemen with sticks, stones, and iron rods. They also tore the uniforms of the officers,” the first information report (FIR) stated.
