ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court’s constitutional benches are set to begin hearing cases from November 14 (Thursday), according to sources cited by ARY News.
The decision was made in a meeting of the seven-member constitutional bench, formed by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP). The meeting was chaired by senior Supreme Court judge Justice Aminuddin Khan, with Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar joining via virtual link.
The hour-long meeting concluded with an agreement to commence hearings before the constitutional benches starting November 14.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi appointed Justice Aminuddin as head of the constitutional bench, with a majority vote of 7-5 members. The seven-member bench includes Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Ayesha Malik from Punjab, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Jamal Mandokhel from Balochistan, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi from Sindh, and Justice Musarrat Hilali from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
CJP Yahya Afridi, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, and PTI members Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz opposed the bench’s formation, but the decision carried with a majority vote.
The JCP meeting was attended by senior Puisne Judge Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Aminuddin Khan, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan, Pakistan Bar Council representative Advocate Akhtar Hussain, PPP’s Farooq H. Naik, PML-N’s Shaikh Aftab Ahmed, and Roshan Khurshid Barrucha.
