ICC Chief Prosecutor Under Investigation for Misconduct

The Hague: The International Criminal Court’s governing body announced Monday it has launched an external investigation into alleged misconduct by Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, who denies the claims.

Khan, who drew attention in May by requesting ICC arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three senior Hamas leaders, stated that he welcomes the investigation and the chance to participate in the process.

Paivi Kaukoranta, President of the Assembly of States Parties (ASP), emphasized the need for an external probe to ensure “a fully independent, impartial, and fair process.”

Khan, a 54-year-old British lawyer, has been accused of alleged sexual misconduct involving a colleague, though he insists “there is no truth to suggestions” of such behavior. Expressing regret over the public airing of these allegations, Khan stated that he would continue his duties as prosecutor as required by his mandate.

The ICC has yet to rule on the arrest warrants Khan requested against the Israeli officials and Hamas leaders. Previously, Khan also secured an ICC warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin, who in turn faced retaliation with warrants issued against him by Russian authorities.

Throughout his career, Khan has stirred debate, having defended former Liberian President Charles Taylor against war crimes charges related to Sierra Leone.
