This latest discovery by PPL marks the fourth consecutive hydrocarbon find in the block, where PPL holds a 63 percent working interest (WI). Its joint venture partners include Mari Petroleum Company Limited (32 percent WI), Sindh Energy Holding Company Limited, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (2.5 percent WI).
Following the initial discovery in the Upper Sand (D-Sand) layer, further exploration confirmed a significant hydrocarbon zone. Drilling results indicated a flow rate of 12.4 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas and 196 barrels per day (bbl/d) of condensate from the C-Sand layer at a wellhead pressure of 2,551 pounds per square inch (PSI).
The Pateji-X1 well, which began operations on October 11, 2024, after extensive geological and geophysical studies, reached a depth of 2,475 meters to assess the potential of the Lower Goru Formation.
This ongoing discovery underscores PPL’s technical capabilities and its commitment to enhancing Pakistan’s energy security. The new reserves are expected to boost the country’s hydrocarbon supply, reduce reliance on costly energy imports, and conserve valuable foreign exchange.

In September 2024, OGDCL also made a significant gas discovery in Sindh’s Khairpur district at the Akhiro-1 exploratory well in the Sawan South Block. The Sawan South Joint Venture, which includes OGDCL, United Energy Pakistan Limited, Government Holding Private Limited, and Sindh Energy Holding Limited, announced the success of this well.
Drilled to a depth of 12,442 feet, the Akhiro-1 well produced approximately 10 Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day (MMSCFD) of gas, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 4,000 pounds per square inch, confirming the well’s substantial gas output capacity.
