Pakistan’s leading star, Mahira Khan, has recently opened up about her struggle with depression and the challenging journey to recovery.
In a candid interview, Khan highlighted the significance of having a support system and seeking proper medical care during such a phase.
Reflecting on her experience, she shared, “I was really, really depressed. It was a dark time for me. People would say things like, ‘Look at all you have… Look at who you are… Look at your life.’ But none of it registered.”
She urged people to avoid making such comments, explaining, “This is not something you say to someone battling depression, because they can’t help it. It’s a disease—a chemical imbalance—with specific triggers.”
The Raees star elaborated that mental health conditions, whether depression, bipolar disorder, or other illnesses, require appropriate treatments and medications. “These are diseases, and there are medicines and therapies designed for them,” she emphasized.
Speaking about her healing journey, Khan credited medication as her initial lifeline. “The other thing that helped me was my support system, which is so important. You need that—someone’s hand to hold onto,” she said.
She also highlighted the need to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. “Talking about it is essential to detach the shame and stigma associated with it. When you open up, you often find support from others who have faced similar struggles,” she added.
