On September 23, 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will celebrate its 94th National Day, marking a significant occasion since the kingdom’s unification in 1932 under King Abdulaziz Al Saud. In light of this event, I wanted to explore the deep relationship between Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. I arrived in Ankara about a year ago, having been appointed as the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Türkiye. From the moment I arrived, my family and I felt welcomed and embraced, as we quickly noticed the many cultural similarities, particularly in hospitality and generosity.
Saudi-Turkish diplomatic relations, which began in 1929, are distinctive and have flourished across various levels. This cooperation is evident in political coordination on regional and international issues, as well as in economic and investment ties, where trade between the two nations plays a crucial role. Both countries are also members of the G-20, which includes the world’s largest economies.
I would like to commend the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) for receiving the Lebbeytum Award of Excellence for its service to Hajj pilgrims in 1445 Hijri. Their organization during the pilgrimage was exemplary, and the Makkah Road Initiative, launched at Ankara’s Esenboğa and Istanbul airports, has streamlined travel procedures for Turkish pilgrims, allowing them to begin their journey smoothly.
During my time here, I have witnessed rapid development in bilateral relations, guided by the directives of the kingdom’s leadership, including the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince. In July alone, four high-ranking officials visited Türkiye to discuss enhancing cooperation. This included meetings between the Minister of Defense and the Turkish President, as well as the Minister of Municipalities and Housing, who explored opportunities in infrastructure. Additionally, the Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre visited Gaziantep and Hatay to launch a Cochlear Implant Program. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also held a press conference with his Turkish counterpart, emphasizing coordination on regional issues, particularly the Gaza crisis, and signing a protocol to amend the Saudi-Turkish Coordination Council’s founding document.
As Saudi Arabia embarks on numerous development projects under Vision 2030, including hosting Expo 2030 and the 2034 World Cup, significant investment opportunities arise. Turkish companies are well-equipped to participate in these projects alongside global competitors.
The trade volume between Saudi Arabia and Türkiye reached $6.8 billion in 2023. The Saudi-Turkish Business Forum held in February 2024 was crucial in exploring investment and tourism opportunities, with participation from key ministers and Turkish business leaders.
The tourism sector also highlights our strong ties. Türkiye’s natural and historical attractions draw many Saudi tourists, with over 800,000 visiting last year. Conversely, many Turks visit Saudi Arabia for tourism and Umrah, particularly after the introduction of the Electronic Visa (e-visa), which simplifies the travel process.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize the strength of our bilateral relationship and express optimism for its continued growth and prosperity for the benefit of both nations and their peoples.
