While trending reels of peacefully sleeping newborns and happy babies may tug at your heartstrings, the reality of postpartum motherhood is often far different, as Sarwat Gilani, actor and mother of three, openly shared her difficult experience with postpartum depression on Ayesha Omar’s Speak Easy show.
“Postpartum depression is overwhelming,” Sarwat admitted, recalling a time when she couldn’t even bring herself to look at her daughter. “But Allah helps you through it, and Allah gets you out of it.”
She explained that her postpartum depression was so severe at one point that she contemplated ending her life, despite having a supportive husband by her side. “My husband felt helpless,” she said, describing how she felt isolated even though he was present. “I would feel guilty, cry, and these are all thoughts tied to depression—whether it’s from marriage, finances, or breakups. It’s not just one cause.”
Sarwat emphasized the importance of seeking professional help and therapy when dealing with depression, as willpower alone isn’t always enough.
Today, Sarwat is no longer struggling with depression and shared advice for nurturing both mental health and relationships in a marriage. “Respect boundaries with your spouse and your in-laws,” she encouraged.
She also suggested managing expectations, particularly if your husband is the primary financial provider. “Don’t be materialistically demanding,” she advised. “If you can, contribute financially, especially if he’s carrying the weight of the household and the kids.”
To maintain harmony, Sarwat stressed the need to resolve conflicts before bedtime. “Never fight and sleep!” she emphasized. “Always resolve the issue!”
Lastly, Sarwat highlighted the importance of supporting each other’s growth. “Celebrate each other for who you are and the changes you want to make,” she said. “Accept and appreciate one another, and help each other succeed.”
