KARACHI: A man was arrested in Nazimabad No. 3, Karachi, for allegedly holding a polio worker captive in his apartment, ARY News reported.
The incident began when a polio worker entered the building to administer vaccines. The resident, a mobile market trader, along with his family, refused the vaccination and reportedly confined the worker to a room within the flat.
The situation escalated when an assistant commissioner, accompanied by a heavy police presence, arrived at the scene following the team’s complaint.
The resident’s family claimed their child was unwell and insisted they would administer the vaccine themselves.
The police intervened by forcibly breaking down the door to free the worker. The resident was arrested, and a case was filed against him. Authorities have indicated further arrests may follow based on the charges.
Earlier, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district, a policeman was killed, and a polio worker was injured during an attack by unidentified assailants. The policeman was providing security for a polio vaccination team in the Banda Dawood Shah area.
In response, law enforcement has increased police presence in the area following the assailants’ escape.
A similar incident occurred on Monday morning in Bannu district, where a policeman, also guarding an anti-polio team, was injured in a shooting. The officer, identified as Hayat Ullah, was shot while securing the vaccination team during the drive in the Saddar police station area. Authorities suspect the attack was motivated by personal enmity.
