Governor halts vice-chancellor appointments at Punjab universities.

LAHORE: Tensions are escalating over the appointment of vice chancellors at six universities in Punjab, as Governor Sardar Salim Haider has rejected the summaries submitted by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

Governor Haider returned the summaries, citing legal concerns and non-adherence to established protocols, leading to a standoff between the Punjab government and the governor’s office.

The governor’s spokesperson indicated that the summaries did not comply with the necessary requirements, which dictate that three candidates must be listed alphabetically for the governor to choose from.

In response, the Punjab government asserts that the appointments are being made based on merit, noting that seven vice chancellors have already been appointed in the initial phase. Government sources have voiced confusion over the governor’s refusal to approve the appointments, labeling his objections as “beyond comprehension.”

Despite this setback, the provincial government has pledged to move forward with the remaining appointments according to legal procedures, asserting that the governor is constitutionally obligated to approve the summaries.
