The federal government has announced its plan to launch 5G technology in Pakistan next year, aiming to boost the national economy and enhance consumer experience. However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has highlighted several obstacles that must be addressed beforehand.
Significant investments are required to upgrade the existing network and infrastructure. The installation of costly fiber optics, small cell sites, and advanced antennas will impose a substantial financial burden on the telecom sector. Additionally, the economic returns on these investments are expected to take time to materialize.
Another hurdle is the limited availability of 5G-compatible smartphones in the country, which could hinder widespread adoption. The PTA further noted that urban areas, with their relatively developed infrastructure, are likely to benefit from 5G sooner, while rural areas may face delays due to the high logistical and development costs.
The report emphasized that government incentives and public-private partnerships could play a critical role in easing financial constraints and accelerating the deployment of 5G services across the country.
