IHC Proposes Closure of ‘Ineffective’ Missing Persons Commission

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered the submission of a sealed report by December 27 in the case of Mudassar Khan, a missing resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

During the hearing, the court expressed strong criticism of the Missing Persons Commission, describing its efforts as deceptive and ineffective.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, who presided over the session, voiced his dissatisfaction with the commission, stating that it was failing to perform its duties and misleading the public. “The Missing Persons Commission is neither functioning nor allowing others to do so. What purpose does it serve if it doesn’t work? Close it down,” he remarked. He emphasized that if the commission were doing its job properly, petitioners wouldn’t need to approach the court.

The assistant attorney general informed the court that Mudassar Khan, the petitioner’s husband, went missing from Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir. The petitioner’s lawyer revealed that the case had been under the commission’s review since August and that, on November 18, the petitioner received a phone call from her husband, suggesting he was in custody.

Justice Kayani acknowledged the positive news of the phone call, saying, “It’s good to know that he is alive and well.” He directed the relevant officer to brief the court in-camera on the matter.

The court has postponed further proceedings until December 27, instructing authorities to submit a sealed report on the case of Mudassar Khan.
