Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch has defended the military court verdicts against civilians involved in the May 9 riots, asserting that the trials were conducted “under a law enacted by the Parliament of Pakistan” and aligned with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Her statement followed concerns raised by the US State Department over the use of military courts to try civilians.
Last week, 25 civilians received prison sentences ranging from two to ten years for their roles in violent attacks on military installations during the May 2023 riots.
The military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), praised the verdicts as “a significant milestone in delivering justice.”
