Bangladesh reached 107 for 3 (Mominul 40*, Shanto 31, Akash Deep 2-34) against India on the rain-affected opening day of the second Test in Kanpur.
Bad light and heavy rain limited play to just 35 overs. The start of the match was delayed by an hour due to a wet outfield from overnight rain. After winning the toss, India, led by Rohit Sharma, opted to bowl first under cloudy skies. Rohit’s decision marked the first time India had chosen to bowl first in a home Test since 2015. India fielded an unchanged XI, relying on their seamers to capitalize on the conditions, while Bangladesh, taking a different approach, chose to bat first and included three spinners in their lineup.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj bowled tight opening spells, with Bumrah delivering three maiden overs, but neither managed to take an early wicket. It was Akash Deep who made the breakthrough in the ninth over, dismissing Zakir Hasan for a duck, with Yashasvi Jaiswal taking a low catch at gully. Akash Deep struck again shortly after, trapping Shadman Islam lbw for 16 following a successful review.
Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque steadied the innings with a 51-run partnership, though Shanto’s luck ran out when R Ashwin trapped him lbw for 31 just after lunch. Mominul, growing in confidence, combined with Mushfiqur Rahim to navigate a few tense moments before rain and poor light forced an early close of play, just before 3pm local time.
