MSPCA aims to dispel black cat myths and support shelters impacted by Hurricane Helene.

As Halloween approaches, MSPCA-Angell is reassuring the public that black cat adoptions are safe and not to be feared. The organization is also providing assistance to shelters impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Currently caring for around 40 black cats, MSPCA-Angell is waiving adoption fees for select cats, including many black cats, at all four of its centers from Oct. 1 to Oct. 4.

“There are so many myths about black cats and Halloween that people still believe,” said Mike Keiley, MSPCA-Angell’s Vice President of Animal Protection. “The facts and data consistently disprove these myths, but unfortunately, they persist and often result in worse outcomes for cats during this season.”

Keiley noted that black cat adoptions often suffer in October due to unfounded fears, leading some shelters to halt adoptions near Halloween. “We’re confident these myths are baseless, and we would never consider stopping black cat adoptions, even at our Salem shelter, located in one of the spookiest cities in the world,” he added.
