ISLAMABAD: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif announced that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will resume direct flights to the United Kingdom (UK) by the end of February, as reported by ARY News.
In an interview on ARY News’ “Aiteraz Hai” program, Khawaja Asif revealed that PIA would also expand its operations to 19 European destinations, including Barcelona and Milan. Furthermore, the airline plans to begin flights to the United States and Canada. Asif emphasized that these expansions would increase PIA’s value, enhancing its appeal for privatization.
After facing significant challenges in recent years, PIA has been working to revive its operations and restore its reputation. Just yesterday, PIA’s first flight to Paris, PK 749, landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport, marking the airline’s return to Paris after more than four years.
At the airport, passengers, PIA officials, aviation staff, and the crew were warmly welcomed by Charge d’Affairs Ms. Huzefa Khanum, along with members of the Pakistani diaspora.
It’s also noteworthy that PIA is seeking approval to resume its flight operations to the UK. The airline has formally written to the UK Department of Transport and Civil Aviation, under the guidance of CEO Khurram Mushtaq, requesting permission to restart services. Sources from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed receipt of the letter, which also includes a request to reinstate the Third Country Authorisation for PIA’s UK operations. PIA plans to resume flights to London, Birmingham, and Manchester.
