As internet users in Pakistan continue to struggle with slow speeds, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is considering reaching out to SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk to address the ongoing issue.
Special Assistant to the KP Chief Minister, Shafqat Ayaz, revealed that the provincial government is also in talks with other experts to tackle the internet slowdown, which has significantly impacted the IT sector in the region.
“There is an internet issue in KP, but the reasons behind it remain unclear,” Ayaz stated.
Pakistan has been facing persistent internet speed problems, with the government attributing the issue to submarine cable faults, while some reports suggest that authorities might be experimenting with a “firewall.”
The situation follows confirmation from Musk that he is awaiting approval from the Pakistani government to launch Starlink, his satellite internet service, in the country.
On Saturday, Musk tweeted, “We are waiting for approval from the government,” during a conversation with Pakistani social media activist Sanam Jamali, who urged him to expedite Starlink’s launch, emphasizing the opportunities and educational benefits the service could provide.
Last month, Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, confirmed that Pakistan is in discussions with Starlink to introduce its services in the country. “We are in talks with Starlink to bring them to Pakistan,” Khawaja stated during a Senate Standing Committee meeting on IT and Telecommunication.
