As winter approaches, medical experts are sounding the alarm about increased health risks for individuals with heart conditions and high blood pressure.
Experts warn that cold weather can worsen these conditions, and neglecting precautions could prove life-threatening.
Professor Tahir Sagheer, Executive Director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), highlighted that cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, disrupting blood flow and increasing strain on the heart.
“The likelihood of heart attacks rises significantly during winter due to these factors,” he explained.
Professor Nawaz Lashari, President of the Pakistan Hypertension League, similarly cautioned against sudden exposure to cold water, emphasizing its potentially fatal impact.
“Cold showers in this weather can be deadly, particularly for individuals with heart issues or high blood pressure,” Lashari warned.
The experts underscored the importance of regular exercise, especially walking, to promote heart health and reduce heart attack risks.
“Something as simple as a daily walk can significantly improve heart health and lower the chances of a heart attack,” advised Professor Sagheer.
However, many Karachi residents expressed concerns over limited heating options. “With the ongoing gas shortage, warming water for bathing has become challenging, making it harder to follow precautions against the cold,” one local resident shared.
Medical professionals continue to urge citizens to adopt preventive measures to protect their health during the harsh winter months.
