Barrister Gohar: Open discussions held, but no intention from the government to establish a commission

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan criticized the government on Saturday for failing to demonstrate seriousness in forming a commission to probe the incidents of May 9 and November 26, despite engaging in talks initiated in good faith.

“We didn’t enter discussions for mere pleasantries or photo opportunities,” he stated, adding that a case involving a protest outside the Supreme Court, including terrorism charges in the FIR, was under hearing.

He revealed that several lawyers implicated in the case were currently appearing in court, and the judge had hinted at the possibility of dismissing the case in the next session.

Gohar stressed that the PTI had entered the dialogue process despite facing numerous injustices, including convictions against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. During the talks, PTI had tabled two demands, but the government failed to respond within the agreed seven-day timeframe.

He criticized the government for its lack of action in finalizing the terms of reference, timeline, and composition of the commission, describing this inaction as evidence of its lack of commitment.

“Continuing discussions for the sake of formality serves no purpose,” Gohar remarked, adding that Imran Khan had decided to end the negotiations in light of the government’s unresponsiveness.

Despite this decision, he reaffirmed PTI’s willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with all political parties but held the government’s dismissive attitude responsible for the breakdown of talks.
