KOHAT – The Kurram peace jirga concluded with a call for the immediate implementation of the peace agreement.
A spokesperson for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government announced that committees consisting of representatives from both sides would be formed to ensure the agreement’s enforcement. He also mentioned that the next jirga session would be scheduled following additional consultations. In addressing the core issues of the conflict, he noted, “The Kurram problem is rooted in deep-seated hatred. We have drifted away from Islamic principles, and we are only harming ourselves. The jirga can only succeed if we eliminate this hatred.”
He urged all involved parties to reflect on past wrongdoings, stressing that taking human lives is an unforgivable act. “We are killing our own children and women. There is no foreign influence—this conflict is of our own making,” he expressed regretfully.
Barrister Saif also emphasized the role of social media in fueling tensions, explaining that although the nation welcomed the peace agreement, certain groups were determined to destabilize the situation.
Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa highlighted the shared responsibility of both the government and local elders in upholding peace.
“Peace benefits everyone, and both sides must cooperate with the government to restore stability. While military action remains an option, it would have widespread repercussions. Those responsible for the recent attack on the Assistant Commissioner are enemies of peace and must face justice, regardless of their affiliations,” he asserted.
