Waabi and Volvo to collaborate on developing autonomous trucks.

TORONTO: Waabi, a leader in generative AI for real-world applications, has entered into a strategic partnership with Volvo Autonomous Solutions to co-develop and launch self-driving trucks. This collaboration merges Waabi’s cutting-edge AI technology with Volvo’s renowned expertise in automation and safety, marking a significant step towards a new era of safer, more efficient, and sustainable freight transportation.

The partnership will see the integration of Waabi’s advanced virtual driver system, Waabi Driver, into the Volvo VNL Autonomous truck, which is equipped with redundant systems to ensure safe autonomous operation. The Volvo VNL Autonomous will be manufactured at Volvo’s New River Valley assembly plant, built on their autonomous technology platform.

Raquel Urtasun, Founder and CEO of Waabi, stated, “At Waabi, we believe that integrating next-gen AI directly into an OEM’s vehicle production is key to deploying safe, scalable autonomous vehicles on the road. Volvo’s leadership in safety and engineering excellence, along with its commitment to innovation, makes them the perfect partner for bringing self-driving trucks to reality.”

This alliance is poised to transform the $1 trillion North American freight industry by enabling the deployment of autonomous trucks that elevate safety and efficiency standards. Both companies are focused on developing autonomous transport solutions that prioritize safety, sustainability, and efficiency, addressing the challenges of modern transportation.

Waabi’s AV2.0 technology, which is based on an interpretable and verifiable AI model, allows autonomous trucks to safely navigate diverse road scenarios. When integrated with Volvo’s autonomous truck platform, this innovation is paving the way for a safe, commercially viable autonomous solution.

Shahrukh Kazmi, Chief Product Officer at Volvo Autonomous Solutions, commented, “Waabi is leading the charge in self-driving technology by harnessing the full potential of AI. We are thrilled to incorporate Waabi’s advanced tech into our autonomous truck platform, working together to create a safe, efficient, and scalable transport solution.”

This partnership builds on Volvo’s previous collaboration with Waabi, having first invested in the company through Volvo Group Venture Capital in January 2023. The companies are now laying the foundation for integrating Waabi Driver into the Volvo VNL Autonomous and preparing for testing in 2025.
