ISLAMABAD: Electricity rates are expected to drop by around Rs2 per unit for consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi.
Distribution companies have submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a reduction in electricity prices.
The price cut is anticipated as part of the quarterly adjustment for the period from October to December 2024. NEPRA has received a proposal to reduce electricity prices by Rs52.12 billion, which is part of the second quarterly adjustment for the current fiscal year.
A hearing regarding the request is scheduled for February 12. The proposal includes a Rs50.66 billion reduction in capacity charges, Rs2.66 billion in transmission and distribution losses, and Rs2.69 billion in operational and maintenance costs.
If approved, this reduction will offer relief to electricity consumers nationwide.
Earlier, in January, NEPRA announced a 20-paise per unit increase in electricity prices. This hike was part of the quarterly adjustment for the first quarter of the current fiscal year, which added an extra Rs1.18 billion in electricity costs for consumers.
The price increase applied to electricity consumption for December 2024, but lifeline and prepaid consumers were exempted. Additionally, under the winter package, consumers using extra electricity were also not affected by this adjustment.
