Miftah Ismail, speaking on ARY News’ “Sawal Yeh Hai” program, criticized the government’s lack of commitment to privatization, particularly regarding PIA, leading to the withdrawal of potential investors. He accused the government of prioritizing power retention over meaningful reforms, such as implementing agricultural tax policies or addressing the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.
Ismail also pointed out the 22% rise in the budget, despite the government’s claims of cost-cutting, and highlighted the Rs600-700 billion allocated for Members of the National Assembly (MNAs). He criticized the Sindh and Punjab governments for purchasing new vehicles, burdening the poor and salaried citizens with taxes.
In response to a question, he noted that the IMF delegation had raised concerns over Pakistan’s lack of an agricultural tax, stagnant tax policies, and pension reforms. The IMF’s visit was seen as precautionary, fearing that the agreement could fall off track. However, Ismail reassured that the immediate threat of a mini-budget had been avoided until December, with the IMF closely monitoring Pakistan’s financial performance.
On November 15, 2024, the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCOP) reaffirmed the government’s commitment to privatizing PIA, either through privatization or a government-to-government deal. The committee also discussed evaluating potential transaction options for the privatization of the Roosevelt Hotel, considering available legal provisions.
