MNAs and senators’ salaries surge by 143% to Rs519,000

Sources reveal that the salaries of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly will remain unchanged, as the Finance Committee lacks the authority to modify their pay. They will continue to receive Rs218,000 per month, as confirmed by the Speaker’s Office.

Last week, a proposal to align the salaries and benefits of lawmakers with those of a federal secretary was submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The proposal was approved by the National Assembly’s finance committee, after which Speaker Ayaz Sadiq forwarded it to the prime minister. It recommended setting the monthly salary and allowances for MNAs and senators at Rs519,000.

Currently, a federal secretary’s monthly salary and allowances, after deductions, amount to Rs519,000.

Parliamentary insiders disclosed that earlier demands for a monthly salary of Rs1 million were rejected by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. This proposal was supported by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and other parties, arguing for parity between lawmakers and high-ranking federal officials.

Notably, 67 lawmakers from the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) also submitted formal requests advocating for a salary increase. The finance committee further proposed extending federal secretary-level benefits and facilities to parliamentarians, with the current monthly salary and benefits of lawmakers standing at Rs218,000.
