Punjab lifts ban on early market closures; shops to remain open longer!

The Punjab government has officially lifted restrictions on early closures of markets, shopping malls, and restaurants following a notable improvement in the air quality index.

The announcement came through a notification issued on Friday by Environment Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh. Businesses across Lahore, Multan, and other parts of the province can now operate without time limitations, returning to their standard schedules. Restaurants, fast-food outlets, hotels, and exhibitions are also free from prior restrictions.

“The ban on closing shops, markets, and malls at 8 pm has been lifted, along with restrictions on working hours for restaurants and other businesses,” the DG stated.

This decision aims to ease operations for business owners and the public while maintaining vigilance over air quality levels. Local authorities will continue to monitor the situation to balance environmental concerns with economic needs.

Background on Restrictions

The initial restrictions were implemented on Nov 11, following Lahore High Court orders in response to hazardous pollution levels. Markets in major divisions such as Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Multan were mandated to close by 8 pm. Public gatherings and outdoor dining were also restricted, except for essential services like pharmacies and bakeries.

The measures, enforced under the Environment Act, came after air quality levels exceeded hazardous thresholds, necessitating urgent action. Exemptions were granted for activities like religious gatherings and essential services.

Gradual Relaxation of Measures

In late November, the government began easing restrictions in four districts, including Lahore, allowing construction activities and certain industrial operations to resume. Government and private offices were permitted full staff capacity, signaling a shift toward normalcy.

Now, with air quality showing significant improvement, the full lifting of business hour restrictions reflects a balanced approach to environmental management and economic revival.
