Hundreds gather to honor veteran actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma

Tens of hundreds gathered on Saturday to pay their final respects to veteran actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma, who passed away at a private hospital on Friday evening after a battle with cancer, at the age of 80.

Her body was kept at the hospital for public viewing on Friday night and Saturday morning before being moved to the Kalamassery Municipal Town Hall. Here, hundreds of people, including fans, paid tribute to the State award-winning actor, known for her iconic roles as a mother and grandmother in Malayalam cinema.

Kaviyoor Ponnamma, who became a symbol of maternal characters in Malayalam films, was honored by Minister for Industries and Law, P. Rajeeve, who represented the State government. Prominent actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal also paid their respects. Kerala State Chalachitra Academy Secretary S. Ajoychandran laid a wreath on behalf of the Minister for Cultural Affairs, Saji Cherian, while Academy Chairperson Premkumar paid tribute to the legendary actor as well.

The actor’s body was later taken to her residence in Aluva before being cremated with full State honors.
