Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar is reportedly preparing for his OTT debut with a big-budget web series for Netflix.
Best known for directing iconic romantic films like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna,” and “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” Johar is now set to direct a Netflix series, according to Indian media reports.
The yet-to-be-titled series will feature a star-studded cast of renowned female actors, Johar’s team announced in a press statement.
The script has been finalized, and production is slated to begin in early 2025.
“The project has entered the casting phase, aiming to bring together a notable ensemble of actors. As a Karan Johar creation, it is expected to be one of Netflix’s most ambitious upcoming projects. Filming will take place throughout 2025, with a 2026 streaming release,” a source told Hindustan Times.
Once the Netflix series wraps, Karan Johar is set to return to the big screen with a major action film he announced in 2019.
Notably, Johar will become the second prominent Bollywood director to debut on an OTT platform, following Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who directed “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” for Netflix.
The cast of “Heeramandi” included Bollywood stars such as Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal. The show was a success, and Netflix later approved a second season of Bhansali’s web series.
On June 3, Netflix India confirmed via Instagram that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut series “Heeramandi” had been renewed for a second season.
