Punjab to impose ban on theatre actors, owners promoting vulgarity.

The Punjab government has announced a strict crackdown on obscenity and indecency in theatres, introducing lifetime bans for actors involved in vulgarity and revoking the licences of theatres promoting inappropriate content.

During a meeting with theatre owners, Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bukhari expressed strong disapproval of the state of some theatres, criticizing their promotion of indecency. She announced a lifetime ban on actors engaging in vulgar acts and stressed the government’s commitment to transforming theatres into family-friendly venues.

Bukhari emphasized that theatres in Punjab should provide quality entertainment for families without discomfort. She highlighted that the Punjab chief minister is determined to reshape theatres into spaces that align with cultural and family values.

The provincial minister instructed the Punjab Arts Council to require affidavits from theatre owners, ensuring compliance with anti-obscenity rules. Theatres currently sealed will only reopen after submitting these affidavits.

She warned theatre owners of strict action for violations, stating that show-cause notices, fines, and licence cancellations would follow any breach of the new rules. Bukhari also announced that the government is drafting new legislation to regulate theatres, prioritizing family-oriented productions. Theatres adhering to the regulations and producing quality content will receive full government support.

The provincial government has issued a final warning to theatre owners, urging them to maintain cultural values and avoid activities that compromise public decency.
