The Queen Is Back: Anne Hathaway Returns as Mia Thermopolis in Princess Diaries 3

Fans of The Princess Diaries franchise have reason to rejoice—Adele Lim, the creative mind behind Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon, is set to direct the highly anticipated Princess Diaries 3, according to Variety. The third installment of the beloved series, originally featuring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, is progressing with Lim at the helm, promising to unfold a new chapter in the story of Mia Thermopolis and the fictional kingdom of Genovia.

“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m thrilled to be part of bringing the third installment of this cherished franchise to life,” Lim stated. She emphasized that the film will continue to explore the core themes of “female empowerment, joy, and mentorship,” which have resonated with audiences since the series began.

Debra Martin Chase, who launched the franchise back in 2001, is producing the film, while Hathaway will also serve as a producer through her Somewhere Pictures banner. Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack will come on board as executive producers.

Hathaway expressed her excitement for the project by sharing the announcement on social media and quoting the iconic line from the first movie, “Shut up!”—a nostalgic callback that thrilled fans. Development on the film has been underway since 2022, and Hathaway hinted at its progress in a previous interview with V Magazine, stating, “We’re in a good place.”

While plot details remain under wraps, Princess Diaries 3 is expected to continue from where the 2004 sequel, Royal Engagement, left off. In the previous film, Mia Thermopolis fully embraced her role as the queen of Genovia, overcoming challenges and even finding love. The new installment will likely delve into Mia’s reign, her evolving responsibilities as queen, and the personal and political challenges she faces. Fans can look forward to more royal escapades, heartwarming moments, and the signature charm that made the first two films beloved classics.

Lim’s impressive credentials have fans buzzing with excitement. She co-wrote Crazy Rich Asians, a cultural phenomenon, and followed it up with the critically acclaimed Raya and the Last Dragon. Her directorial debut came in 2023 with the comedy hit Joy Ride, establishing her as a rising talent in Hollywood.

With Lim’s expertise and Hathaway’s charisma back in the mix, it’s no wonder that anticipation is soaring. The return of The Princess Diaries feels like the perfect cinematic reunion, celebrating girl power, royalty, and a touch of romance.
