On the International Day of the Girl Child, acclaimed actor Saba Qamar was appointed as UNICEF’s first National Ambassador for Child Rights in Pakistan.
Qamar expressed her gratitude for the role, calling it an “honor,” and reiterated her commitment to advocating for children’s rights. She stated, “In my recent travels, I’ve seen the challenges faced by children and women in this country, as well as the remarkable impact of UNICEF’s dedicated work.” The “Kamli” actress emphasized her dedication to helping children achieve their dreams.
Saba also shared photos on Instagram showcasing her interactions with young girls, saying, “I met some incredibly inspiring individuals this week and had some wonderful experiences. I have so many stories to share!”
She aims to leverage her platform to advocate for children’s rights and raise awareness about critical issues such as child marriage, gender inequality, lack of education, and climate change.
UNICEF data indicates that one in six women in Pakistan are married during childhood, resulting in approximately 19 million child brides in the country. Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, welcomed Qamar’s appointment, calling her “a brave and powerful advocate for women’s and girls’ rights.”
He added, “We look forward to working closely with her to highlight some of the biggest challenges facing children in Pakistan today.”
