Lahore: Air Quality Index Hits Hazardous 700, Making City Most Polluted Globally

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore skyrocketed to alarming levels early this morning, nearing a hazardous 700, according to a global monitoring site. The city’s overall AQI has been recorded at 690, securing its position as the world’s most polluted city.

Residents are now facing unhealthy air quality, leading to a noticeable increase in respiratory problems such as coughs, viral flu, and sore throats, as reported by medical experts.

In response to the dire conditions, health authorities are urging citizens to wear masks and goggles, limit unnecessary outdoor activities, and take necessary precautions to protect their health.

The AQI report includes recommendations for Lahore’s residents to refrain from outdoor exercise, keep windows closed to prevent dirty air from entering, wear masks when outside, and use air purifiers for cleaner indoor air.

Winter exacerbates the pollution problem, as colder air traps harmful particles, causing them to settle and create a dense layer of contaminants. This pollution is primarily attributed to the burning of crop residues, emissions from factories, and the combustion of coal, garbage, oil, or tires, all of which significantly contribute to the toxic air that persists until the end of the winter season, according to experts.
