In a recent notification issued by DG Environment Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh, the Punjab government has lifted certain smog-related restrictions, allowing construction activities to resume in Lahore and three other districts. Brick kilns using zigzag technology are now permitted to operate, and both public and private offices can function at full capacity.
The revised regulations apply to Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, and Faisalabad. From Monday to Thursday, heavy traffic will be allowed entry into these districts, but will be restricted from Friday to Sunday.
The 8 PM closure for shops, markets, and malls remains in place, while restaurants can offer indoor and outdoor dining until 10 PM. However, barbecue setups without proper hood systems will be prohibited.
On November 19, the Punjab government also extended the operating hours for eateries in Lahore, following a decrease in smog levels.
Lahore’s toxic smog has significantly reduced, and the city has fallen to third place in the Air Quality Index (AQI) rankings, after several days at the top as the world’s most polluted city.
The persistent smog in Lahore was caused by a mix of fog and pollutants, including low-quality diesel fumes, smoke from seasonal agricultural burning, and winter cooling.
