Mercy petitions of 19 individuals convicted for their role in the May 9 protests have been approved, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Thursday.
The military’s media wing stated, “Following the promulgation of punishments for the 9th May Tragedy convicts, they exercised their right to appeal and sought mercy or remission in their sentences.”
According to the ISPR, 67 convicts submitted mercy petitions, with 48 processed by the Courts of Appeal. Of these, 19 petitions were approved “purely on humanitarian grounds and in accordance with the law.”
The statement added that these individuals would be released after completing procedural formalities.
It further mentioned that the remaining mercy petitions would be decided in due time through the legal process. The convicts retain the right to appeal and explore other legal options under the law and constitution.
The ISPR concluded by stating, “The remission of punishments reflects the strength of due process and fairness, ensuring justice is served while upholding principles of compassion and mercy.”
