ISLAMABAD: The Federal Apex Committee of the National Action Plan, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has approved a wide-ranging military operation to combat terrorism in Balochistan.
The operation will target terrorist organizations such as the Majeed Brigade, BLA, BLF, and BRAS, which have been involved in attacks on civilians and foreign nationals, threatening Pakistan’s security and economic progress at the behest of hostile external forces. This initiative aims to restore peace and stability in the region, according to an official statement.
The high-level meeting was attended by federal cabinet members, provincial chief ministers, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, and senior officials. It focused on revitalizing Pakistan’s counter-terrorism (CT) strategy and addressing emerging security challenges, including sub-nationalism, religious extremism, disinformation campaigns, and the crime-terror nexus.
The committee emphasized the importance of a unified political stance and a cohesive national narrative to tackle these threats effectively. A strong political consensus and cross-party support were identified as critical for the success of the campaign, in alignment with the Vision Azm-e-Istehkam framework. Key decisions included the revitalization of NACTA and the establishment of National and Provincial Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Centers.
A comprehensive, whole-of-system approach was adopted, integrating diplomatic, political, intelligence, socio-economic, and military efforts. Collaboration between federal and provincial governments and relevant institutions will be enhanced to ensure the smooth execution of counter-terrorism measures. District Coordination Committees will also be established under Provincial Apex Committees to implement directives effectively.
COAS General Munir reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to eliminating all threats to national security and assured full support for the government’s initiatives to achieve peace and stability.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif concluded the meeting by urging all stakeholders to act swiftly on the proposed measures, emphasizing sustained, coordinated efforts to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty, ensure citizens’ safety, and strengthen the nation’s economic and social stability.
