RAWALPINDI: Bushra Bibi Arrested Following Conviction in £190 Million Al-Qadir Trust Case
Former first lady Bushra Bibi has been arrested after being convicted in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case, according to ARY News.
Bushra Bibi arrived at Adiala Jail to join her husband, former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, as the NAB court prepared to deliver its verdict in the Toshakhana-II case.
An accountability court sentenced Imran Khan to 14 years in prison and Bushra Bibi to seven years in the Al-Qadir Trust case. Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict at Adiala Jail, where both were present.
In addition to the prison sentences, the court imposed fines of Rs1 million on Imran Khan and Rs500,000 on Bushra Bibi. Failure to pay these fines will result in an additional six months of imprisonment for Imran Khan and three months for Bushra Bibi.
Following the verdict, Bushra Bibi was taken into custody from the courtroom in Rawalpindi. The court also ordered the government to take control of Al-Qadir University.
The verdict had been delayed multiple times, initially scheduled for December 23 and later postponed to January 6 and January 13.
Background on the Al-Qadir Trust Case
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) initiated an investigation into Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and others over alleged misuse of hundreds of canals of land for the Al-Qadir University Trust, causing a loss of £190 million (approximately Rs50 billion) to the national exchequer.
The charges claim that Imran Khan and others misappropriated funds sent by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to Pakistan. The NAB filed a corruption reference against Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi, and seven others in connection with the case.
The Al-Qadir University Trust was registered by Imran Khan on December 26, 2019, as part of the project.
