Italian Navy’s Iconic Ship, Amerigo Vespucci, Docks in Karachi for Goodwill Visit
KARACHI:
The Amerigo Vespucci, the oldest active military ship in the Italian Navy, has arrived at Karachi port for a three-day goodwill visit.
Built in 1931, this magnificent tall ship is renowned globally as “the most beautiful ship in the world.” Its 24 canvas sails, covering a total area of 2,600 square meters, highlight its impressive stature.
The vessel blends traditional craftsmanship and timeless elegance, with features like its engine room, brass deck instruments, and rosewood-crafted stairs. Equipped with both wind-powered sails and diesel engines, the Amerigo Vespucci has long served as both a training and diplomatic ship.
Upon docking in Karachi, the Italian ship, with its towering masts and intricate rigging, received a warm welcome.
Named after the legendary Italian explorer, the ship is on a global goodwill tour across 28 countries from 2023 to 2025, with Pakistan being one of its key stops.
During its stay, the ship’s officers and crew will engage with their counterparts from the Pakistan Navy.
The Amerigo Vespucci still retains its original navigational instruments and compass, all of which remain fully operational. Its gleaming brass components and rosewood stairs demonstrate its careful preservation. Although initially fully sail-powered, the ship now features four diesel engines, allowing it to reach speeds of 8 nautical miles per hour (16 km/h).
Italian Ambassador and Consul General emphasized the importance of the visit, describing it as a symbol of goodwill and cultural exchange. They also highlighted the strong ties between Pakistan and Italy, with Italy hosting the largest Pakistani community in Europe. The visit aims to strengthen these relations, particularly with the recent establishment of a trade commissioner’s office in Islamabad to enhance economic cooperation.
Captain Joseph, the commanding officer of the Amerigo Vespucci, called the ship a symbol of Italian culture and traditions. He praised its historical significance and elegance, referring to it as one of the most beautiful ships in the world.
This is the Amerigo Vespucci’s first visit to Pakistan, though it marks Captain Joseph’s sixth visit to Karachi, where he expressed admiration for the city’s vibrant culture and rich cuisine.
