Karachi water crisis subsides after completion of 84-inch pipeline repair

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi finally found relief as the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation successfully completed repairs on the 84-inch main water pipeline on University Road, ARY News reported on Monday.

The repair work, which spanned 11 days, has restored water supply to numerous areas across the city.

A spokesperson for the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation confirmed, “The water supply has been resumed following the repair of the 84-inch main pipeline. Supply from the Dhabeji pumping station has been restored, and lines are now being charged.”

The pipeline had ruptured on November 28 during construction work on the Red Line Track, disrupting water supply to vast areas of the city.

The prolonged repair work caused a severe water shortage in key areas such as Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi Admin Society, Jamshed Town, Lyari, and the old city, leaving millions of residents struggling without water for days.

The crisis was worsened by the suspension of water tanker services due to the closure of two major hydrants in the city, amplifying the challenges faced by Karachi’s citizens.

Reports indicate that Karachi receives only half of its required water supply. Of this, a significant portion is either lost due to theft—often linked to alleged hydrant and tanker mafias—or wasted through leaks in outdated and poorly maintained pipelines.

Experts have called for coordinated policies involving all stakeholders, alongside strengthening the local government system, to ensure citizens’ concerns are effectively addressed and resolved.
