The Lahore police have formed a Cyber Squad to address aerial firing, weapons display, and their promotion on social media ahead of New Year’s Eve.
DIG Operations Lahore, Faisal Kamran, revealed that a comprehensive action plan has been implemented to curb aerial firing. Alongside the Cyber Squad, special police teams have been deployed in hotspot areas for New Year and Christmas celebrations to monitor and crack down on the promotion of illegal weapons and aerial firing online.
DIG Kamran emphasized that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in aerial firing, with offenders facing imprisonment. He highlighted that 831 individuals have been jailed and 505 cases registered this year alone for aerial firing and displaying weapons. He warned that stray bullets from aerial firing often result in the tragic loss of human lives.
“Do not let your celebrations turn into mourning. Public cooperation is essential to eliminate this dangerous act of aerial firing. Citizens are encouraged to report any criminal activity in their areas by calling 15,” he urged.
In a related incident, YouTuber Rajab Butt was arrested by police in coordination with the Wildlife Department for displaying firearms and illegally keeping a lion cub at his home. The arrest followed the emergence of a viral video showing Rajab receiving a lion cub as a wedding gift, raising concerns about illegal wildlife possession.
Rajab Butt, however, denied violating any wildlife laws, claiming the lion cub was a gift from a friend during his wedding. He was later released on personal surety, with the SHO granting relief until his scheduled court appearance.
