KARACHI: Training Aircraft Tire Bursts While Taxiing on Karachi Airport Runway

A training aircraft’s tire burst while it was taxiing from the taxiway to the runway, according to sources.

The captain quickly responded by applying the emergency brake, successfully managing the situation. The private aviation company’s aircraft sustained damages worth over Rs500,000.

The Pakistan Airports Authority, Civil Aviation Authority, and Aircraft Owners Association have been informed about the incident.

Stray Dogs and Debris Pose Safety Risks at Karachi Airport

Previous reports have raised concerns over the presence of stray dogs and debris around the General Aviation hangars at Karachi Airport, creating significant safety risks for flight operations.

In one recent incident, a stray dog narrowly avoided colliding with a taxiing aircraft, forcing the flight to be canceled due to safety concerns. Following this, authorities took action to remove stray dogs from the airport premises.

Additionally, debris, including metal objects, has been found near the hangars, creating further hazards. These obstructions have caused multiple tire bursts, leading to flight delays, cancellations, and financial losses from tire replacements and other damages.

Airport officials have been urged to address these critical safety concerns to ensure the protection of passengers, crew, and aircraft operations.

Previous Incidents at Karachi Airport

In August 2021, two stray dogs were shot dead on the runway of Jinnah International Airport after being spotted during the takeoff of an Islamabad-bound flight. The incident, which was filmed by a passenger, highlighted gaps in the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) measures to secure the airport perimeter.

Additionally, repeated alerts about heaps of garbage near the airport have raised concerns about bird strikes, further emphasizing the need for immediate action to ensure safety.
