The Supreme Court of Pakistan reserved its decision on Tuesday regarding the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) petition, which challenges the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) order to establish election tribunals in Punjab.
The case was heard by a five-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, along with Justices Amin-ud-Din Khan, Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Naeem Akhtar Afghan, and Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi.
During the hearing, CJP Isa questioned PTI’s lawyer Salman Akram Raja, asking if the party expected judges to rule in their favor.
The court also focused on resolving the conflict between the ECP and LHC over tribunal formation. Justice Aqeel Abbas informed that the LHC Chief Justice had set up four tribunals, with the remaining four to be appointed by the ECP.
CJP Isa stressed that the number of tribunals should align with the volume of cases and warned against diminishing judicial resources. He also highlighted that many legal issues could be prevented if the constitution were fully upheld.
Additionally, the CJP criticized media outlets for inaccurately reporting court proceedings, stating that the judiciary shouldn’t need to issue constant corrections.
The court has reserved its ruling, with a short order on the election tribunal case expected soon.
