Defense seeks consolidation of 13 cases linked to May 9th GHQ attack

The hearing for the May 9th GHQ attack case took place today at Adiala Jail, with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan appearing in the courtroom.

During the session, the prosecution recorded statements from three additional witnesses, bringing the total number of statements to 12.

Defense lawyer Faisal Malik completed his arguments regarding Imran Khan’s bail request. The prosecution will continue its arguments on the bail at the next hearing.

In a separate development, the defense requested that family members of Imran Khan be allowed to attend the trial, which was granted. However, the prosecution objected to the presence of Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, arguing that she had already been convicted in another case and sentenced. The prosecution maintained that the law prohibits a convicted individual from attending another trial.

Additionally, the defense lawyers filed a motion to consolidate all 13 cases related to the May 9th incident, arguing that the cases stem from the same conspiracy and should be tried under a single charge. They requested that all the related cases be merged into one trial.

The hearing was adjourned by Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Judge Amjad Ali Shah, with the next session scheduled for January 29th.

In related news, PTI had earlier challenged the 26th Constitutional Amendment in the Supreme Court, calling it unconstitutional, illegal, and unacceptable. The party filed a petition, asking for the amendment to be declared null and void and seeking a halt to judicial appointments by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan until the petition is decided. PTI argued that the amendment violates the Constitution’s basic structure and undermines the judiciary’s independence.
