Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (Retd) Faiz Hamid has been formally charged with multiple offenses, including involvement in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act, abusing his authority and government resources, and causing harm to individuals, the military’s media affairs wing announced on Tuesday.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated that these charges are part of ongoing court martial proceedings under the Pakistan Army Act.
“On 12 August 2024, the process of FGCM was initiated against Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Retd) under the provisions of the Pakistan Army Act. Initially, he has been formally charged with engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act, which is harmful to the state’s safety and interests, misusing authority and government resources, and causing wrongful harm to individuals,” the ISPR said in a press release.
In addition to the charges, a separate investigation is underway into his alleged role in incidents that contributed to political unrest in the country, particularly events surrounding the disturbances of May 9, 2023, the statement added.
“During the process, Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Retd)’s involvement in actions that incited agitation and unrest, leading up to several incidents, including but not limited to the May 9, 2023, events, and his role in fostering instability at the behest of and in collusion with political interests, is also under separate investigation,” the ISPR stated.
“Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (Retd) is being granted all legal rights in accordance with the law,” it concluded.
