Imran Khan Granted Bail in Toshakhana 2 Case, But Jail Release Remains Uncertain Due to Legal Hurdles
Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been granted bail in the Toshakhana 2 case, yet his release from jail remains uncertain due to ongoing legal challenges from other pending cases.
Khan faces complications from three anti-terrorism cases filed in Rawalpindi in relation to protests on September 28 and October 5. These cases, registered at the Naseerabad, Newtown, and Taxila police stations, have not resulted in formal arrests. Additionally, bail bonds for five other cases related to the May 9 events have yet to be submitted, even though seven other May 9 cases have had their bonds cleared. The Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) cannot issue a release order until all bail bonds are in place.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted Imran Khan bail in the Toshakhana 2 case. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb presided over the hearing, during which defence lawyer Salman Safdar provided details on the investigation. The court highlighted the shift of the case from the NAB to the FIA and questioned the actions taken against Customs officers involved in the case, noting their negligence but asserting it did not amount to criminal misconduct.
The court has instructed Khan to submit bail bonds of Rs1 million each and appear in the trial court following his release. The court also warned that failure to cooperate during the trial could result in the withdrawal of the bail.
