Interior minister assures Chinese envoy of enhanced security measures for citizens

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi assured Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zaidong on Thursday of reinforced security measures for Chinese nationals in Pakistan.

During a meeting at the Chinese embassy in Islamabad, Naqvi expressed solidarity with Ambassador Zaidong regarding an incident in Karachi where two Chinese citizens were injured after being shot by a security guard at a textile mill in the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE) area.

The minister emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding Chinese nationals, particularly those involved in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects. He provided the ambassador with a briefing on the incident, pledged a swift and transparent investigation, and reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to delivering justice.

Addressing security concerns for CPEC initiatives, Naqvi assured the ambassador that Pakistan is taking “all possible measures” to protect Chinese citizens and CPEC-related assets.

He underscored Pakistan’s alignment with China’s development-focused security approach, stating, “We fully support the Chinese approach of integrating development with security and will prioritize the safety of Chinese nationals and projects.”

Naqvi noted that security forces are actively enhancing protective measures, especially in Karachi, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The minister’s meeting with the Chinese envoy followed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s strong condemnation of the attack, delivered during his visit to the Chinese embassy. The prime minister also confirmed that the best medical care is being provided to the injured and that he is closely monitoring the investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
