K-Electric cuts power supply to Pakistan Railways

KARACHI: Power Dispute Between K-Electric and Pakistan Railways Causes Major Disruptions

The ongoing conflict between K-Electric (KE) and Pakistan Railways over unpaid bills has resulted in significant disruptions to the railway system, ARY News reported.

Reports indicate that the electricity outage has led to operational failures, including the shutdown of Karachi’s railway booking system.

Pakistan Railways’ DS, Nasir Khalili, explained that the power cut has caused the collapse of both the online booking system and the automatic signaling system, both critical for smooth railway operations.

Khalili also mentioned that K-Electric had been issued a notice to clear the outstanding dues, warning that Pakistan Railways would withhold payments to KE if the issue remains unresolved.

He stressed that the power outages would negatively impact passengers.

In response, a K-Electric spokesperson stated that continuing the power supply to Pakistan Railways is not possible without settlement of dues.

K-Electric claims Pakistan Railways owes over Rs 430 million for 31 connections and insists that payment be made promptly to restore electricity. The spokesperson also noted that several reminders had been sent to railway officials before the power was cut off.

The dispute has further escalated, disrupting services and raising concerns for passengers relying on the railway network.

A similar situation occurred in August 2024 when K-Electric disconnected the power to Pakistan Railways offices over unpaid dues exceeding Rs 200 million. This disconnection affected the City Railway Station, railways colonies, the booking office, and the engine loco shed.
