Live Updates: Army stationed in Islamabad with shoot-on-sight directives

Security Forces Deployed in Islamabad Amid Escalating Violence

Early Tuesday, security sources confirmed the deployment of the army in Islamabad following multiple attacks on law enforcement agencies.

Officials have been directed to respond firmly to anarchists and miscreants, including shoot-on-sight orders for those threatening public safety. Measures are also being implemented to counter potential terrorist acts by violent elements.

In a tragic incident on the Srinagar Highway, miscreants rammed a vehicle into Rangers personnel, resulting in the martyrdom of four officials. Five others, including Rangers and police officers, sustained serious injuries.

Security sources reported the martyrdom of two police officers in similar attacks, with over 100 law enforcement personnel injured—many critically—since the PTI initiated its protest march toward Islamabad.

Constitutional Provisions and Government Warnings

Article 245(1) of the Constitution empowers the armed forces to defend Pakistan against external threats and assist civil power as directed by the federal government. This provision also restricts courts from questioning such directives or intervening in areas where the army operates under Article 245.

Late Monday night, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned of possible curfews, army deployment, or other extreme measures if the PTI’s protests continued to escalate into violence. He urged protesters to relocate to the Sangjani area, emphasizing that entering Islamabad would not be permitted.

“If we have to impose a curfew, invoke Section 245, or take a third option, we will not hesitate,” Naqvi stated, adding that authorities are working to prevent loss of life despite provocations.

US Calls for Restraint and Respect for Rights

As tensions rise, the US State Department has urged restraint and respect for human rights in Pakistan. Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the need for peaceful protests and adherence to fundamental freedoms.

“We support freedom of expression globally, including in Pakistan,” Miller stated, urging protesters to avoid violence and the government to respect human rights.

The State Department also stressed maintaining law and order in line with Pakistani law. This call came as violence escalated during PTI protests, including the fatal attack on Police Constable Mubashir, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a clash at Hakla Interchange.

The situation remains tense, with both domestic and international stakeholders calling for calm and peaceful resolution.
