Military emphasizes no political leader’s ambition outweighs Pakistan’s welfare.

RAWALPINDI: Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry reaffirmed that no political leader’s ambition surpasses Pakistan’s welfare.

Responding to a query regarding alleged backdoor talks between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the establishment, he stated: “No individual, their politics, or desire for power is above Pakistan.”

During a media briefing on Friday, questions arose about reports of an “officer” mediating discussions between the government and PTI. The ISPR DG clarified that the Pakistan Army maintains professional and governmental relations with every administration, emphasizing that these relations should not be misconstrued as political affiliations.

“The Pakistan Army is a national force, not tied to any political ideology or party,” he stressed. He further added that political matters are best resolved among political parties themselves, welcoming efforts towards dialogue over anarchic or violent politics.

Commitment to Fighting Terrorism

Lt Gen Chaudhry highlighted the army’s relentless fight against terrorism, noting that 2023 saw the highest number of terrorists neutralized in five years. Over 59,779 intelligence-based operations were conducted, eliminating 925 terrorists and apprehending many others.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of the armed forces, with 383 officers and soldiers martyred this year alone, urging the nation to value their sacrifices. “Our soldiers are paying with their blood to secure the nation,” he remarked.

Highlighting the cross-border threats from Afghanistan, he noted that terrorist networks originating there continue to target Pakistan. “We remain resolute in dismantling these networks and ensuring national security,” he said, adding that the repatriation of undocumented Afghan nationals is ongoing.

Border Security and Regional Tensions

Discussing regional challenges, Lt Gen Chaudhry emphasized the military’s readiness to counter any aggression from India. He condemned India’s human rights violations in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Kashmiri people.

“Pakistan will continue to provide legal, diplomatic, and moral support to the people of Kashmir,” he said, condemning India’s oppressive tactics and targeting of minorities.

Military Courts and May 9 Incidents

Addressing concerns about the May 9 riots, the ISPR DG reiterated that these incidents were a matter of national importance, not just a military concern. He defended the role of military courts, emphasizing their alignment with the constitution and validation by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“The process of justice will continue until all planners and perpetrators are held accountable,” he declared.

Public Welfare and Development

Lt Gen Chaudhry highlighted the military’s involvement in public welfare projects, including 6,500 educational programs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the construction of three dams in Balochistan. He emphasized the military’s role in fostering national development and urged collective efforts to address the nation’s challenges.

“Our mission is clear: a secure Pakistan means a stronger Pakistan,” he concluded, reaffirming the armed forces’ commitment to both security and the public’s well-being.
